About the Artist

Horses and art were the focus of Michigan artist Andrea Harman Steiner's early life but were necessarily set aside at intervals for family, work and care-giving.  Now, while she no longer owns a horse, art has come full circle and is again a compelling influence in her life.

Although she enjoys painting a wide range of subjects, Steiner finds combining horses and art to be the perfect marriage, proving ideal for line, color, motion and drama.  She enjoys exploring the excitement of traditional sporting art genres, the power behind the "Gentle Giant" draft horses as well as tender scenes between mare and foal and the sometimes funny antics of ponies.  She works exclusively in oils after an initial preference for graphite, colored pencil and pastel.

Starting with Harness Tracks of America's juried art exhibit-sales in the mid-90s, Andrea has since exhibited at numerous relevant juried shows including the prestigious American Academy of Equine Art, picking up awards, gallery representation and commissions as her paintings gained widespread recognition.  Her work was selected for the 1997 Draft Horse Classic poster and has been pictured on the covers and feature articles in numerous publications, among them The Chronicle of the Horse, The Equine Image, Wildlife Art News, Polo: Player's Edition, Sidelines, Michigan Thoroughbred Breeder's Association, Draft Horse Journal, Hoof Beats, Art Horse Magazine and Equine Vision.

Her commissions include multiple pieces for the Ontario Jockey Club in Canada and the Menlo Polo Club in California, and she has paintings in the collections of numerous racing stables and farms as well as with sporting art collectors and horse owners.

Andrea has shown her work in invitational, juried and group shows at the Kentucky Derby Museum, the International Museum of the Horse in Kentucky, the National Museum of Polo in Florida, the Ronald Regan Presidential Library in California, the Wildlife Experience Museum in Colorado, the Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Fame and Museum in South Carolina, the Columbia Art League in Missouri, the Cornell Museum of Art and Culture in Florida, the Aiken Center for the Arts in South Carolina, and the Northern Westchester Center for the Arts in New York.

She has participated in numerous gallery shows, among them the Sporting Gallery, in Middleburg, VA; Frost and Reed Gallery, Saratoga Springs and New York City; and the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) Traveling Exhibition conducted by Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, KY.  Over the years her work has been included in galleries in California, New Mexico, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.  She is currently an Associate Member of the Society of Animal Artists and the Oil Painters of America.
